In the face of COVID-19 pandemic, numerous countries have implemented protective measures including social distancing and quarantine to contain the spread of coronavirus. To mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in the Philippines, the government has restricted the movement of people by placing the entire Luzon under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). The implementation of ECQ prompted all students and most workers to be locked down at home together with their families.

As we spend weeks staying inside our homes, let’s not forget to be mindful of our overall health – mental and physical – during these uncertain times. It is important to recognize that this extraordinary situation could also pose some health risks especially for those who are careless about their diet or those who eat more than what is required. Since there are limited things to do, people turn to eating to kill time while others tend to snack on chips and sweets while watching movies or TV series. Instead of preparing healthy gulay recipes, people also tend to stock up on and consume more canned goods and instant food that are usually high in sodium.

Here are some practical tips on how to strengthen your family’s defenses against viruses and bacteria while being quarantined at home:

  • Practice moderation

Know your limit and have the discipline to know when to stop eating. Avoid overconsumption of food.

  • Regularly consume balanced meals

This is to keep your health and wellness journey on track and to effectively eliminate your cravings for unhealthy snacks.

  • Eat varied food items

Don’t limit yourself to regular food items, exchange some canned goods with fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables to offer variety and create power meals for your family.

  • Cook with your family

Engaging your family, especially your kids, in preparing home-cooked meals could be both fun and educational. This activity can open them up to try out nutritious and delicious dishes.

  • Be resourceful and creative in the kitchen

With a multitude of simple gulay recipes, you can mix and match available food items to assemble a healthy meal for your family, while providing delicious flavors that could win over your pickiest eater.

Extraordinary situation calls for extraordinary recipes to supply our bodies with necessary nutrients to give us energy, repair our body tissues, and regulate our bodily functions.
